Sample Paper - Trademarks

Technically, a trademark as defined by Encarta encyclopedia is “any word, phrase, or symbol used by manufacturers or sellers to identify their goods and distinguish them from the goods of others” (2006). Thus, trademarks extend beyond simple brand names into slogans, trade dress and other product or service elements. In addition, it spares business owners from sharing the limelight for quality products and services they produce with imitators – both intentional and unintentional ones. For instance, who has not seen the ever famous double yellow arch of McDonald’s? Or perhaps, the plain yet striking check mark, accompanied by a catchphrase “Just Do It” of the sport-apparel company, Nike? Maybe, many has been more familiar with the alligator logo of Lacoste, a clothing apparel store? And of course, there is the matchless shape of the Coca Cola bottles. At least for these well-known companies, despite the presence of competitors, these trademarks are more than enough to establish their credibility in customer satisfaction. Nevertheless, even in products which are not very famous, trademarks are still very significant. If there is no trademark, how can a particular product be ever known? That is almost close to impossible. As an adage by an advertising executive, William Bernbach, goes, “A logo is like a man's name. When I mention a certain man you know well, everything about that man jumps into your mind...A logo does the same thing for a product”....

Sample Paper - Psychoanalysis, Behaviorism, and Consciousness

The state of consciousness defies definition, but it may involve an awareness of self, dreams, emotions, moods, perceptions, sensations, and thoughts, although not essentially all of these. The issue surrounding the definition consciousness, and in what sense and to what extent this state exists, is the focus of a plethora of studies in psychology, philosophy of mind, cognitive science, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence. In psychoanalysis, consciousness includes cognitive processes of the ego (thinking, perception, planning) and some aspects of the superego like moral conscience. Sigmund Freud went on to distinguish unconscious and conscious behavior. However, behaviorists dismiss consciousness as having no use in science....

Sample Paper - The War of 1812

The War of 1812 was mainly between the United States and Great Britain. The “relatively small conflict” (Heidler & Heidler, 2002, p.1) lasted for almost three years—from June of 1812 to Spring of 1815. The war still continued for a few months after a peace treaty ending the war was signed in Europe in December of 1814. It was mainly borne from the heated conflict between European superpowers Great Britain and France “pursued war policies that threatened the economic policies of the United States” (Heidler & Heidler, 2002, p.1)....

Sample Paper - The Relationship between Drop-out rates and high-stake exams

Issues on education took up a complicated level wherein the micro aspects of this pervasive social institution are given much scholarly attention.  Recently, a concern about the effect of increased use of high-stake testing on students’ academic performance has baffled the intellectual circle. This created two opposing walls; the advocates who believe that different sort of high- stakes testing will motivate students to work harder and achieve higher, and the critics who strongly suppose that failing a high-stake exam will push a student to the verge of academic collapse through dropping out. The term "high-stakes" is used to describe tests that have high stakes for individual students, such as grade promotion or a standard high school diploma. Thus, high-stakes testing is intended to hold individual students liable for their own test performance, dissimilar "system accountability," which is designed at the providers of education, such as states, school districts, and schools ( SchwabLearning, 2001). The rationale of testing students has long been discussed among educational policy and educational psychology specialist, and there has been a plethora of research circulated on this subject matter....

Sample Paper - Obesity in Children

Does a big tummy bulge or a sagging arm mean that one is obese? How fat should one be in order to be called obese? Over the years, the term obesity has acquired meaning in laymen. However, according to Franken (2005), there is no easy way to define obesity. Current definitions states that obesity refers to people who have a very moderate amount of fat in their bodies and those that are morbidly overweight (Franken, 2005). Comparing body weight to height, build, age and gender, an individual is considered obese when he or she exceeds the certain ratio between these factors (Franken, 2005). This is where the Body Mass Index comes in whereby the percentage of fat to body mass is compared. According to the National Health Organization, a body mass index exceeding 25 kg/m2 is overweight while a 30 kg/m2 BMI is considered obese (“Obesity and Overweight”).

Current methods of Obesity use the BMI and the waist circumference measure. The latter is the measure of abdominal fat (“Obesity Basics,”1990). Since abdominal fat is a measure of risk factor for obesity-related condition, it is wise to measure the fat in this area of the body. According to Lohman (1987), boys with a total body weight more than 25 percent body fat while 32 percent body fat in girls is considered obese. Also, Lohman (1987) suggests that it is more accurate to determine obesity in children using skinfold measure than the 2 methods mentioned previously....
